Selenium is incorporated into at least 25 selenoproteins via the unique amino acid selenocysteine, encoded by the UGA codon. The glutathione peroxidase (GPx) family uses selenium to neutralise hydrogen peroxide and lipid hydroperoxides throughout all tissues, while thioredoxin reductase maintains the cellular redox environment essential for DNA synthesis and repair. Critically, iodothyronine deiodinase enzymes (DIO1, DIO2, DIO3) require selenium to convert the prohormone T4 to the active thyroid hormone T3, making selenium indispensable for normal metabolism.
