Gymnema sylvestre — known in Sanskrit as Gurmar or 'sugar destroyer' — contains gymnemic acids, a family of triterpenoid saponins structurally similar to glucose. Their dual mechanism is uniquely effective: at the taste receptor level, gymnemic acids temporarily block sweet taste perception; at the intestinal level, they compete with glucose at SGLT1 on the brush border membrane, slowing glucose absorption.
