Grape seed extract (GSE) is standardised for oligomeric proanthocyanidins (OPCs) — condensed flavanols that are among the most potent plant-derived antioxidants measured by ORAC, exceeding vitamins C and E by a factor of 20 and 50 respectively. OPCs demonstrate a remarkable affinity for collagen and elastin fibres, cross-linking with and stabilising these structural proteins through inhibition of collagenase, elastase, and hyaluronidase — the enzymes responsible for connective tissue degradation. GSE additionally inhibits xanthine oxidase (the enzyme generating superoxide during purine catabolism), reduces LDL oxidation by chelating transition metals, and modulates NF-κB to reduce inflammatory cytokine production. Clinical evidence supports GSE for chronic venous insufficiency, skin photoageing, and capillary fragility.
